A hotel refreshment cabinet has to do more than hide a small refrigerator. It gives guests somewhere to make a drink, keeps supplies organized, and places equipment within reach of the people who clean and maintain it. A convincing furniture elevation can still leave those everyday tasks unresolved.
Good hotel minibar cabinet design starts with the actual equipment and the way the station will be used. Review the cabinet in three conditions: installed, in use, and being serviced. A refrigerator that fits inside the opening has passed only the first of those checks.
Define what the refreshment station includes
Begin with the operating concept. Will the refrigerator hold items sold by the hotel, complimentary refreshments, guests’ own drinks, or a combination? Will the counter carry a kettle, a capsule machine, a bottled-water tray, or no hot-drink equipment at all?
Those decisions affect the furniture layout. A display-led minibar needs a different arrangement from a guest-use fridge with a small tea tray. If the hotel supplies several drink options, count the cups, glasses, sachets, capsules, bottles, and waste items that must share the station.
Separate the equipment list from the furniture order. Record which party selects and supplies each appliance, which accessories come with it, and who checks compatibility. A photograph showing a refrigerator beneath a counter does not establish that it is included in the cabinet price.

Plan three kinds of space

Operating space
This is the room needed to use the station. Show the fridge door or drawer open, the guest standing in front, and any neighboring furniture in its normal position. Check whether a chair, room-entry door, or suitcase would obstruct access.
Use representative contents during the review. A guest may be able to open the fridge slightly but still struggle to remove a bottle or use an internal compartment. At the coffee machine, the operating envelope may include opening a lid, lifting a reservoir, or removing a drip tray.
Service space
This is the space and access needed to inspect, clean, disconnect, and remove equipment using the approved procedure. Identify which panels are removable, how their fixings are reached, and where an appliance can be placed during service.
A planned removal route is more useful than an unexplained note saying “maintenance access.” Confirm that permanent trim or adjacent cabinetry does not make the route unusable after the room is finished. Electrical work and equipment servicing belong with appropriately qualified personnel.
Treat ventilation as a documented interface
Ventilation is not a decorative choice. Follow the selected appliance’s installation instructions for openings, clearances, and the required airflow route. A visible grille alone does not establish that the enclosure meets those instructions.

Lay out the coffee station around the full task
Putting a coffee machine on a shelf does not finish the coffee station design. Walk through making a drink: retrieve a cup, add water or a capsule as instructed, operate the machine, collect the drink, and handle the used items.
Allow access above and around the machine
Check how the selected machine is filled and opened. If a reservoir lifts upward or a lid hinges back, a shelf immediately above the appliance may interfere with routine use. Confirm the equipment’s permitted operating position and clearances from its own instructions.
If the concept requires moving an appliance to use it, reassess the arrangement with the equipment supplier and hotel team. Do not assume that a short cord, a heavy machine, and a crowded counter will accommodate that movement safely.
Preserve a clear landing area
Allocate a place to set down a cup or bottle without balancing it on the refrigerator or blocking the machine controls. Draw the tray, machine, and replenished supplies at their real sizes. The remaining clear surface is what the guest actually has available.
Consider a simple planning example: a machine, two cups, a kettle, and a water tray fit on the countertop when carefully staged. Once a guest opens the machine and puts a used cup beside it, there is no free area left. Removing an unnecessary accessory or relocating the supplies may solve the problem better than adding another shelf.
Distinguish clean supplies from used items
Give clean cups and drink supplies an identifiable location. Decide where used capsules, wrappers, and wet spoons go, and how staff remove them. The layout should make the intended routine understandable without relying on a permanently perfect display.
Coordinate the cabinet, counter, and services

Discuss countertop joints, exposed edges, and the transition to the wall in the context of routine spills and cleaning. A wood-look surface, stone appearance, or removable tray does not by itself establish resistance to heat, standing water, or the hotel’s cleaning products.
Plan power with the responsible electrical professional. Provide the equipment list and proposed locations so supply requirements and access can be reviewed. If a sink or plumbed beverage machine is proposed, expand the coordination scope before approving the cabinet. Water supply, drainage, and access require their own review; a dry refreshment cabinet should not be assumed to accommodate them.
Review replenishment and equipment changes
Ask housekeeping to work through a normal reset using the proposed layout. Can staff see which items need replenishing? Can they remove the tray, reach the back of the counter, and clean the supply compartments? Are small packets likely to disappear into inaccessible gaps?
For appliance replacement, record the current model and the criteria that a substitute must satisfy. “Same capacity” or “same width” is not an adequate replacement rule. The new model may change access, electrical requirements, the front arrangement, or the permitted enclosure.
Keep a simple responsibility record: appliance selection, cabinet coordination, electrical review, installation, and operating instructions. Assign each item to a named project party. This helps prevent an equipment change from being treated as a furniture-only decision.
Test the station with actual objects

Can any compact refrigerator go inside a cabinet?
No. Check the exact model’s permitted installation method. Its size alone does not establish that an enclosure, decorative front, or particular airflow arrangement is acceptable.
Should a coffee machine sit directly above the minibar?
It can be considered as a layout option, but the combination needs review. Check the countertop use area, equipment instructions, filling and cleaning movements, appliance enclosure, and service arrangements. Stacking the functions vertically does not resolve those interfaces automatically.
